Who we are
Rota Vitae ("the app," published on the App Store as "Wheel of Life") is an Apple-platform application published under the Carpe Diem umbrella. It is a reflection and wellness tool built around the Wheel of Life. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. You can reach us any time at [email protected].
No account
The app has no traditional account or sign-up. You don't create a username or password with us, and we don't maintain a user profile on any server we operate. Your identity, where it exists, is your own Apple ID and Game Center identity, handled by Apple.
Your wheels, check-ins, and history
The content you create — the areas on your wheel, your ratings (1–10) at each check-in, your history of wheels over time, your Wheel Scores, and any reflection notes or goals — is created and stored on your device. We, the developer, do not receive or store this content on servers of our own.
iCloud sync
If you are signed in to iCloud, the app syncs your wheels, check-ins, history, and settings through your own private iCloud (a CloudKit private database tied to your Apple ID). This keeps your data consistent across your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. This data lives in your private iCloud, is governed by Apple's privacy policy, and is accessible only to you on your own devices. We, the developer, cannot access it. If you are signed out of iCloud, the app stores everything locally on your device only.
Apple Health
The app can read a small amount of data from Apple Health to keep the Health & Fitness area of your wheel in sync, so that one spoke stays honest without you rating it by hand. This is optional. iOS asks for your permission first, you choose which categories to allow, and you can turn it off at any time with the Use Apple Health switch in the app's Settings, or withdraw access entirely in Settings → Privacy & Security → Health.
When you allow it, the app reads only these categories:
- Steps and exercise minutes — as daily averages over the previous 7 days.
- Resting heart rate — as an average over the previous 30 days.
- Sleep — as average hours asleep per night over the previous 30 days.
Access is read-only. The app never writes anything back to Apple Health. (When an app links Apple Health, Apple requires it to declare a write permission alongside the read permission, so you may see one listed; the app does not use it.)
These readings are used for exactly one purpose: to work out a single 1–10 rating for your Health & Fitness area. That calculation happens on your device. The underlying Health data is never copied off your device and never reaches us — we have no servers of our own to send it to. It is not written into your iCloud sync, and it is not part of what you share with friends or groups: the Wheel Score the app syncs and shares is deliberately calculated without the Apple Health value, so your Health readings are never exposed to anyone you share a wheel with. Only the resulting 1–10 rating is mirrored to your own widgets and your own paired Apple Watch. Your Health data is never used to target or personalize ads, never given to advertisers, and never sold or shared with any third party.
Friends, groups, and sharing
Connecting with other people is entirely optional. If you choose to use it:
- Game Center is used to discover friends and identify you to people you connect with. Your Game Center identity is managed by Apple under Apple's terms; we do not receive your contacts or your full friends list.
- Groups and share links are built on CloudKit Sharing. When you share a wheel or join a group, the relevant data is shared through Apple's CloudKit Sharing mechanism with the specific people you invite or accept.
You choose what is shared. Sharing is configurable per friend and per group, along a spectrum that you control — for example:
- Your overall Wheel Score and check-in streak only (most private); up to
- Your full wheel, your per-area scores, and your notes (most open).
Only the data you opt in to share is shared, and only with the friends or groups you choose. You can change or revoke sharing at any time. People you share with can see what you've shared with them through their own copy of the app.
Advertising
The app is free and supported by third-party ads sourced from advertising networks (for example, Meta Audience Network) through a mediation platform (CloudX). Before personalized ads are shown, the app presents a consent prompt using a certified Consent Management Platform (InMobi CMP), and — where an ad provider would track you across other companies' apps and websites — iOS asks for your permission through App Tracking Transparency first. When ads are served, the ad provider's software may collect and process:
- Device and advertising identifiers (such as Apple's Identifier for Advertisers, IDFA, when you allow tracking).
- Coarse, non-precise location inferred from your IP address.
- Ad interactions and basic device and usage data needed to deliver and measure ads.
This information is handled under the ad provider's own privacy policy. We never share your wheels, check-ins, history, or notes with advertisers, and that content is never used to target or personalize ads. You can change your tracking choice any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. Declining tracking does not remove ads; it limits ad personalization.
Analytics
The app includes Firebase Analytics (Google), which measures how the app is used. Unlike the advertising software described above, this one is ours — we chose it and we see its reports. It is on by default, and there is currently no in-app switch to turn it off.
What it measures is app usage, not your content. The app logs no events of its own: nothing about your wheel, your areas, your ratings, your check-ins, your history, or your notes is ever sent to it. What Firebase collects automatically is:
- App-instance and device identifiers, including Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA) where you have allowed tracking.
- Coarse, non-precise location inferred from your IP address.
- Interaction events such as app launches, sessions, and which screens you open.
- Basic diagnostic data, including crash and performance information.
Consent is applied in layers. Analytics storage is enabled, while the three advertising-related signals — ad storage, ad user data, and ad personalization — start denied and are granted only to the extent your consent choices allow, as resolved by the consent prompt and App Tracking Transparency. This information is handled under Google's privacy policy. We do not run a separate crash-reporting service.
Our App Store privacy label
Because the app relies on iCloud-synced content, Game Center, optional sharing, and a third-party ad network, its Apple App Store privacy label is not “Data Not Collected.” The label discloses the categories described in this policy — primarily data collected for advertising and analytics, and identifiers used for friend connections and sharing.
Apple Health data is not declared on the label, because the label describes data that is collected — that is, transmitted off your device — and your Health data is only read and used on the device itself.
What we don't do
- No traditional accounts or sign-ups with us.
- No backend of our own: we operate no server that holds your content, and your wheels, check-ins, history, and notes are never sent to us — including to the analytics described above.
- We never sell your wheels, check-ins, history, or notes, and never share them with advertisers.
- We don't read your medical or clinical health records. The app's Apple Health access is limited to the activity, heart, and sleep figures listed above, is read-only, and never leaves your device.
- We never use your Apple Health data for advertising, and never share or sell it.
Children
The app is rated 4+ and contains no objectionable content, but it is designed for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13.
Not medical advice
Rota Vitae is a reflection and wellness tool for thinking about balance across the areas of your life. It is not medical, psychological, or therapeutic advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Your Wheel Score and trends are a self-reflection aid, not an assessment of your health.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and post the revised version at this address.
